History

The Huntington Kennel Club was incorporated April, 1938, when William S. O'Brien was the West Virginia Secretary of State. The club's objectives were "To advance, encourage and promote in every way" the owning, breeding, training and exhibiting of purebred dogs. The club held its first dog show in 1939. A gap in the club's records leads to the assumption that no shows were held during the WW2 years, when the entire country was turned to more serious business. The HKC Charter was reactivated in 1950, when another O'Brien, D. Pitt O'Brien, was West Virginia's Secretary of State. The Huntington Kennel Club, Inc. holds conformation shows and matches, obedience trials and educational programs throughout the year.

    Objectives
  • To further the advancement of all breeds of purebred dogs;
  • To do all in its power to protect and advance the interests of all breeds of purebred dogs and to encourage sportsmanlike competition at dog shows and obedience trials;
  • To conduct sanction matches, dog shows and obedience trials under the rules of the American Kennel Club, and;
  • To protect the health and welfare of all dogs. Club policy is opposed to the practice of breeding litters for scientific laboratories as well as the wholesaling of dogs to pet shops.
