The
Huntington Kennel Club was incorporated April, 1938,
when William S. O'Brien was the West Virginia Secretary of State. The
club's objectives were "To advance, encourage and promote in every
way" the owning, breeding, training and exhibiting of purebred
dogs. The club held its first dog show in 1939. A gap in the club's
records leads to the assumption that no shows were held during the WW2
years, when the entire country was turned to more serious business.
The HKC Charter was reactivated in 1950, when another O'Brien, D. Pitt
O'Brien, was West Virginia's Secretary of State. The Huntington
Kennel Club, Inc. holds conformation shows and matches, obedience
trials and educational programs throughout the year.
